One of the most common causes of leakage problems with lever arm dampers is overfilling them.
As per the Factory Workshop Manual, they should be filled only to the bottom of the 5/16"-26 BSC (British Standard Coarse) threads. The top dome on the units that are employed on the MGB is present in order to serve as an expansion chamber that mitigates internal pressure changes while it is in use. This expansion chamber allows the level of the damper fluid to move upward and downward as the pistons reciprocate. If the Armstrong® lever arm damper is overfilled, i.e., all of the way to the top of the threads, then no needed space for this expansion will remain. The pistons will then create excess pressure that can lead to premature seal failure, allowing the damping oil to seep outward onto the shaft. This in turn will result in retention of dirt, grime, etc., hastening the demise of the Delrin packings on the shaft. This expansion chamber has two small drainage holes that extend downward into the body of the Armstrong® lever arm damper, therefore be patient, fill it slowly, and allow time for the new damping oil to drain into the body of the Armstrong® lever arm damper. The old damper fluid can be removed through these holes by means of a syringe or a burette that has been fitted with a thin piece of flexible tubing.
